How to Follow Up on a Job Application (With Email Templates)
Updated · 5 min read · By the CareerDesks team
A polite follow-up keeps you visible without being pushy. Timing and brevity matter more than clever wording.
When to follow up
- After applying: about one to two weeks later, if the posting gave no timeline.
- After an interview: send a thank-you note within 24 hours, then follow up if the promised decision date passes.
- After an offer conversation: confirm details in writing the same day.

Do's and don'ts
- Do keep it to three or four sentences.
- Do mention one specific detail from the job or conversation.
- Don't follow up more than twice without a reply.
- Don't ask "did you get my resume?" without adding why you are interested.
Tip: Set a follow-up date for each application in your job application tracker so nothing goes quiet by accident.
