Software engineer resume

Software engineer resume: template, tips, and examples

Hiring managers for engineering roles look for what you built, the technologies you used, and the difference it made. Use this guide to structure your resume, then build it with an ATS-friendly template and download a PDF.

What you get

  • Projects and experience

Room for work experience, side projects, and open-source contributions.

  • Grouped skills

Organise languages, frameworks, databases, and tools into clear categories.

  • Links that matter

Add your LinkedIn profile, plus a GitHub or live link and the tech stack for each project.

  • ATS-friendly

Single-column templates that screening systems read reliably.

How it works

  1. 01

    List your stack

Group skills by type and keep only what you can discuss in an interview.

  2. 02

    Write impact bullets

What you built, how, and the measurable result.

  3. 03

    Tailor and download

Match the job's tech stack, then download your PDF.

How to structure a software engineer resume

  1. Header: name, email, phone, city, and your LinkedIn profile.
  2. Summary: your level, focus area, and core stack in two or three lines.
  3. Skills: grouped, for example Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud and DevOps, Tools.
  4. Experience: newest first, three to five bullets per role focused on outcomes.
  5. Projects: essential for freshers and career changers. Link each one to its GitHub repository or live demo.
  6. Education and certifications: degree, college, and relevant certifications.

Write bullets that show impact

A strong bullet answers three questions: what did you do, how did you do it, and what changed as a result? Lead with a verb from our resume action verbs list.

Experience bullets

Reduced checkout API response time from 900 ms to 250 ms by adding Redis caching and rewriting two N+1 queries.

Built a React and TypeScript admin dashboard used daily by the support team, replacing three manual spreadsheets.

Added automated tests and a CI pipeline in GitHub Actions, cutting failed production deploys over the next quarter.

Tip: Name the technologies inside the bullet. "Built X with Node.js and PostgreSQL" shows the skill in context, which is more convincing than a skills list alone.

Software engineer resume mistakes

  • Listing every technology you have ever touched. Keep the skills you could be interviewed on.
  • Describing duties ("responsible for backend development") instead of results.
  • Skill bars and ratings. They take space and say little; recruiters cannot verify "4 out of 5 in Java".
  • Broken or private GitHub links. Check every link before you send.
  • One resume for every role. Reorder skills and projects to match each job's stack.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a software engineer resume be?

One page for students, freshers, and engineers with under about five years of experience. Two pages are reasonable for senior engineers with substantial, relevant work.

Should I include personal projects?

Yes, especially early in your career. Choose projects that use the technologies in the job description and explain what each one does and why it matters.

Is it really free?

Yes. Building and editing are free, and the Standard template downloads as a free PDF. Premium templates are a one-time payment per template and include PDF and Word downloads. There is no subscription.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Start writing straight away; your draft is saved in your browser. If you buy a premium download, we create your account and email you a sign-in link so your resume is saved.
